1. What causes wrinkles?

Wrinkles or facial lines are the most visible manifestation of aging.

Repeated facial muscle contraction during expressions such as smiling or frowning causes lines to form as the skin creases.  Initially these lines disappear as the muscles relax, but as we age, the skin loses some of it’s elasticity and these lines can be seen all the time.

2. What is Botox and how can it help?

Botulinum toxin A is derived from a bacteria.  It has been used for over 20 years to treat various muscular disorders.

When used for aesthetic purposes, it temporarily blocks the facial muscles from contracting and hence the facial lines are not formed.

3. How long does this last?

The effects of the treatment will vary between individuals. Typically for most people the results last 3-6 months. With repeated treatments, it has been observed that the results last longer.

4. Where can it be used?

The majority of treatments are for the upper one third of the face.
  • Frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Crows feet or laughter lines around the eyes
  • Horizontal forehead lines
It can also be used around the mouth and on the neck.
Botox is further used as an effective treatment for excessive sweating – Hyperhidrosis.

5. How is the treatment performed?

A series of injections are given to the area using a micro-needle. For each area, between 3-5 sites are injected.

6. Is it painful?

The vast majority of patients report a mild stinging sensation for a few seconds. An ice pack can be used to numb the area prior to injection.

7. Is it suitable for everyone?

As with any treatment there are contra-indications. During your consultation the doctor will take a detailed history to ensure there are no underlying medical conditions that would preclude you from treatment.

8. What else is Botox used for?

Botox can be used as an effective treatment for Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).  Hyperhidrosis can have a significant negative impact on an individual’s self esteem.  It can cause major distress during work and social situations. Botox can be injected into the armpits to block the nerves that supply the sweat glands. This effectively prevents the glands from producing sweat.
