Acne Treatments
Introduction
Acne is a common skin disorder which affects many people at some point in their lives, often making the sufferer self-conscious and causing discomfort. It tends to be more common in teenagers. However, for many, it appears in their mid-twenties and can persist into middle age.
Acne can be treated using our laser. The system uses a high power laser to penetrate the skin and target the bacteria that produces the inflammation associated with acne.
This bacteria releases molecules called porphyrins which when exposed to the laser beam, increase in number until they destroy the bacteria.
The glycolic peels which are used in conjunction help to unblock the pores and prevent acne. This combined cleansing action minimizes the appearance of pores and breakouts, leaving your skin clearer and fresher.

1. What Causes Acne?
Acne is caused by the over activity of the sebaceous glands that secrete an oily substance called sebum to the skin. Certain processes trigger the sebaceous glands to produce an excess of sebum. At the same time the dead skin cells lining the openings of the hair follicles are not shed properly and clog up the follicles, causing acne to develop.Another cause may be excessive production of androgens (hormones like testosterone) resulting from conditions such as puberty and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Stress and certain medication may also aggravate acne.
2. How does the laser work?
Acne outbreaks increase the blood supply in the affected area. As the laser is passed over the skin, its energy is absorbed into the infected areas where heat is created and the bacteria destroyed. The acne should fade way within a few days.
3. How many treatments will I need?
This all depends on the severity of your acne. It is advised to have at least three treatments four weeks apart for severe outbreaks. We strongly advise that you combine this treatment with recommended home care products and a glycolic peel in order to maximize the treatment potential. These will be discussed at your consultation.
4. Can all areas be treated?
Yes, we can treat all areas where you may experience acne.
5. Are there any pre-cautions I should take before treatment?
It is very important that you do not expose yourself to the sun or sun beds at least four weeks before treatment. If you have signs of a suntan, we cannot treat you until it has faded. Fake tan or make up should also be removed prior to treatment. We strongly advise the use of a sunblock (SPF of 30 or higher) all the time. You should avoid alcohol, aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories such as brufen and photo-sensitive medication before treatment to reduce the risk of a skin reaction and bruising.
6. Who performs the treatment?
A fully qualified nurse who is registered with the NMC and highly experienced in the use of laser systems. All our staff receive ongoing training and support.
7. How long does the treatment take?
We recommend that you have a glycolic peel prior to your treatment which can be done one week before or at the same time as your laser appointment. This will take approximately 45 minutes. For the combined treatment of peel and laser, you should allow 1.5 hours.
8. Do I need to do anything after treatment?
We advise you to:
- Try to keep the area clean and dry
- Avoid swimming pools, saunas, steam rooms and hot baths for 48 hours
- Avoid sun exposure or sun beds for two months
(on exposed areas a total sunblock of SPF 30 should be applied for a minimum of one month) - Use a moisturising gel such as aloe vera for 24-48 hours after treatment.
9. Will I experience any side-effects following treatment?
You may experience a slight sunburnt feeling and some redness or “goosebumps like irritation” of the treated area for a couple of hours after treatment. Applying ice packs or aloe vera gel to the area will help relieve this. Any redness normally resolves by the next day and can be covered with a little make up.You can help minimise any unwanted side effects by following our advice and instructions, especially with regard to sun avoidance.
10. How do I know if I am suitable for laser treatment?
This treatment is suitable for most people with acne. All patients are required to have a consultation with the nurse to discuss their needs and expectations. At this time we can advise you on your suitability. We cannot offer you laser treatment if you have (now or previously) any of the following:
- Keloid scarring
- Scarring/infection of the treatment area
- Use of iron supplements or anti-coagulant therapy
- A photo-sensitive disorder
- Herpes simplex infection of the treatment area
- Epilepsy
11. Is the treatment safe?
